If you haven’t been paying attention — and shame on you if you haven’t — Maria Sharapova launched her own YouTube channel a few weeks ago.
It’s called the “Maria Sharapova Social Channel,” and the official description of this latest marketing ploy by the former world No. 1 goes a little something like this:
“Maria’s groundbreaking new series goes behind the scenes for an intimate portrait on family, friends, fashion, dating and tennis!”
Over the past several days, a few videos have been posted on the social channel that provide a behind-the-scenes look at Miss Sharapova picking out her brand-new Porsche that she won in June at the WTA Porsche Grand Prix.
Unfortunately, Maria skipped the U.S. Open this year after her “Sugarpova” marketing campaign was shut down, when she decided it wasn’t worth the legal hoops to officially change her name to “Maria Sugarpova” to promote her new candy company.
It’s starting to look like “Maria” the brand is more important than “Maria” the tennis player. What do you think?
